The EarthCARE detectives hit 100 in awe-inspiring global investigation

Media Reports & Press Releases |

This was a significant moment in the quest to calibrate and validate data from the satellite’s four trailblazing instruments, which work in synergy to shed light on a major mystery – how clouds and aerosols affect Earth’s climate. The EarthCARE Data, Innovation and Science Cluster produces the algorithms and science products that make EarthCARE data

Above the Clouds: HALO Measurement Campaign Successfully Completed

Media Reports & Press Releases |

Over a period of more than three months, scientists have collected data on cloud formation in the Atlantic with the HALO research aircraft, and repeatedly performed flights underneath the EarthCARE satellite for joint measurements. This campaign, called PERCUSION, was led by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the German Aerospace Center and has now

EarthCARE Validation im vollen Gange!

Media Reports & Press Releases |

Between doldrums and tropical storms – The international HALO aircraft campaign PERCUSION

Media Reports & Press Releases |

From the beginning of August to the end of September the Meteorological Institute contributed to the HALO aircraft campaign PERCUSION. The cloud systems of the intertropical convergence zone were studied using the German research aircraft HALO from Cape Verde and Barbados islands, i.e. from both sides of the Atlantic, and with the new ESA satellite

ORCESTRA: Half-Time for the Tropical Cloud Experiment

Media Reports & Press Releases |

MPI-M researchers and their partner institutions are currently performing atmospheric measurements over the equatorial Atlantic with eight coordinated measurement campaigns. They want to find out what controls the structure of the tropical rain belt, how it will change in the future and what this means for weather patterns. A variety of state-of-the-art research platforms are

HALO under EarthCARE in tandem flight – measurement flights from aircraft and satellite

Media Reports & Press Releases |

The HALO research aircraft from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has successfully completed the first phase of its most challenging mission to date, in terms of flying and science, over Cabo Verde. Since the beginning of August 2024, HALO (the High Altitude and Long Range research aircraft) has been

Messkampagne mit HALO auf den Kap Verden

Media Reports & Press Releases |

ORCESTRA: Exploring Tropical Clouds and their Impact on Climate

Media Reports & Press Releases |

The ORCESTRA started his performance on August 10th in Cap Verde. The PERCUSION gives the beat by flying back and forth across the belt of deep rain over the tropical Atlantic Ocean, while the MAESTRO directs his plane around fields of broken cumuli around Cap Verde to understand how convective storms form and organize. HALO mission integration for PERCUSION

HALO updates |

Integration and preparation for the next HALO mission PERCUSION is ongoing. PERCUSION is planned as a nine-week EarthCARE centered campaign that will focus both on EarthCARE characterization and on studies of deep convection over the tropical Atlantic close to the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) in mid to late summer (between August to October 2024). The objectives of
