2026 AR Recon workshop and 2nd Observational campaigns workshop for better weather forecasts
In 2019, ECMWF held a workshop which successfully brought together past and future field campaigns with model developers and data assimilation experts. As more than 5 years have now passed since this workshop, one can ask the following questions: “were the presented campaigns successful?”, “what new science has been learnt?”, “what impact have the data had on the forecast model and data assimilation development?”, and “what are the remaining gaps needed to be filled by campaigns?”
This workshop at ECMWF will be formed of two separate – yet overlapping in scope – workshops.
1. The 2026 Atmospheric River Reconnaissance (AR Recon) Workshop, providing the latest updates and science from the 2026 season. 2. The 2nd observational campaigns workshop for better weather forecasts, focusing on the northern hemisphere campaigns during January and February 2026 [including NAWDIC]. The most appropriate ways to coordinate related diagnostic work and forecasting experiments will be discussed.
Marking the 10th anniversary of IARC and its first time in Europe, the conference will convene an international, interdisciplinary community to explore the role of atmospheric rivers (ARs) in shaping water availability, weather extremes, and environmental resilience.
We welcome abstracts on the following key themes:
Physical, dynamic, and microphysical aspects of ARs
Aerosol and biogeochemical aspects of ARs
Observing, identifying, and monitoring of ARs
Forecasting of ARs from short to seasonal time scales
Regional aspects and global signatures of ARs
ARs in past, present, and future climates
Role of ARs in the changing cryosphere
This year’s special focus will explore the connection between AR science and stakeholders, including:
Impacts of ARs on the environment and society, including in the context of compound events
ARs and water extremes: from drought to flood & water management
ARs and the Ocean: from physical drivers to biodiversity impacts
