HALO

Start of major aircraft measurement campaign in the Australian Pacific

Third and final part of the CAFE research expedition to study photochemistry and aerosol particle formation in the tropical atmosphere.

In January and February, the German research aircraft HALO will be flying from Australia to investigate a climate change hotspot on the equator. It is the third part of a large-scale series of expeditions dealing with oxidation processes in the atmosphere. CAFE stands for „Chemistry of the Atmosphere: Field Experiment.“ The CAFE-PACIFIC project has now been launched to perform measurements over the tropical Pacific region near Indonesia and northern Australia, the region of the Earth where convection, i.e. the vertical transport of air and thus of clouds and water vapor, is most intense. Two researchers from TROPOS and Leipzig University are also involved..
