International team investigates chemical processes in the atmosphere in Brazil
Joint press release of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Goethe University Frankfurt, Universidade de São Paulo, and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia
The go-ahead has been given for the German-Brazilian research project CAFE-Brazil (Chemistry of the Atmosphere: Field Experiment in Brazil). Since yesterday, an international research team under the leadership of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry will spend around 60 days collecting data on the chemical processes in the largely pristine atmosphere above the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Understanding the natural chemical processes should help explain how, for example, air pollution affects the atmosphere. In addition to measurements by aircraft, data is also collected with the help of balloons, drones, and from the ground at the German-Brazilian research station ATTO. Besides the MPI for Chemistry, the large-scale mission also includes researchers from the Goethe University Frankfurt, the Universidade de São Paulo, and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais.
