Cloud science in New Zealand

The HALO-South expedition: Immersion in a (nearly) untouched atmosphere

Between early September and mid-October, the HALO research aircraft took off from Christchurch almost daily to conduct measurement flights out to the open sea and into the clouds.

The scientists’ goal on the HALO South mission was to investigate in detail the process of cloud formation in this previously little-studied region. On the one hand, this was to improve weather forecasts and climate models for the southern hemisphere. On the other hand, they wanted to
find out how clouds form and function in an atmosphere less affected by anthropogenic pollution. The expedition was led by Mira Pöhlker from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) in Leipzig, who until a few years ago was group leader at the MPI for Chemistry.
